Computer Subwoofers - What to Look For

When it comes to choosing a computer subwoofer, there are some key points every potential customer should understand before choosing the right subs for any home computer. First, the consumer should measure the quality of sound against other models. Subwoofers are typically purchased for the ability to produce the lower frequency sounds and the deepness of bass while not distorting at high volume levels.

While this is something that the quality of the entire computer subwoofer speaker set determines, the quality of the subwoofer in comparison to the companion speakers is important. The bass should be crisp and clear and producing the lowest frequency tones without distortion at any volume level.

Second, the consumer should take into consideration the size of the bass producing speaker. While 15-inch computer subwoofers might be a good choice for a home audio or car audio system, a good 5-inch or 7-inch sub is perfect for computers under normal circumstances. However, if a home sound system connecting to the computer the consumer is planning on setting up, then a larger 10-inch is perfect.

Depending on the set up, these computer subwoofer speakers typically come as part of a three-piece, five-piece or seven-piece set including two or more companion speakers and the larger sub. In this set up, the companion speakers are placed about the room (for home audio connected to the computer) and the sub should be placed where it can get the most air space to throw the sound the farthest. Because of the nature of subwoofers, you can place it almost anywhere in the room. It is unlike the other speakers in that they need to be set in specific places and pointed in the right direction. Just place it where it is out of the way and can get adequate air flow.

The idea is to engulf the entire room in the sound, much like a surround sound system. If at certain points of the room the bass does not sound as strong as it is at other points, then furniture or other items may be blocking the bass form reaching those areas. Simply changing the position of the subwoofer speakers is ideal. Additionally, the consumer could be using a speaker that is too small for the room. If this is the case, purchasing the next size up computer subwoofer should do the trick.

If you’re not quite sure what size of subwoofer would be appropriate for your space, I would highly recommend taking some measurements of your room and heading down to your local audio store. There are usually a number of knowledgeable people there than can assist you. Once you have everything figured out, shop around online or at different local retailers to find the best price. It also isn’t a bad idea to make sure that you are able to return any speakers or equipment that you buy just in case the setup doesn’t sound very good when it’s all hooked up.

All in all, having a proper set of speakers for your computer can make a big difference in nearly anything you do on your computer, from gaming to music to watching movies. Everything just comes more alive when you can hear the audio as it was meant to be.
